International Affairs ( Vivek Ojha) : Gulf region has always been the focal point of energy diplomacy by nations. Petroleum exporting countries led Gulf region fulfils many geoeconomic and geostrategic aspirations of world leaders. In this regard The UK has recently signed a trade agreement with six Gulf nations, in what is described as a huge win for British business.
The deal with the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC), comprising Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, is expected to eliminate around 580 million pounds in annual tariffs on British exports once fully in force. The GCC agreement is the third major trade deal secured under UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government, following agreements with India and South Korea.
Why Gulf region is important for UK:
The Gulf region is critically important to the UK for economic prosperity, foreign investment, global energy stability, and regional security. The Gulf countries sit on some of the world's largest proven oil and gas reserves, functioning as the central bank of global energy markets. Their resources are vital to stabilizing UK energy supply chains and curbing inflation.
Green Energy Partnerships: The UK is actively partnering with Gulf nations on renewable energy, hydrogen development, and sustainable technologies as both regions transition toward net-zero targets.
Regional Stability: The Gulf is a highly volatile but critical geopolitical chokepoint. The UK maintains close defense and security ties with Gulf states to ensure maritime security (especially vital for global shipping routes), counter terrorism, and manage threats from state actors in the Middle East.
Countering Extremism: The UK collaborates heavily with Gulf intelligence to monitor and dismantle extremist networks, contributing directly to domestic security.
