Why Israel’s ‘Crimson Thread’ military barrier is in News

New Delhi ( Vivek Ojha) : Project Crimson Thread is an ongoing Israeli military and infrastructure project in the occupied West Bank, consisting of a trench and a combined separation wall and military road. The route stretches approximately 22 km in length and 50 meters in width between the Ein Shibli and Tayasir checkpoints.

Israel states the project is intended to stop weapons smuggling from Jordan, as the Jordan Valley serves as a natural eastern gateway to the region.

The project is highly controversial for several reasons:

Territorial Impact: The barrier runs several kilometers deep inside the occupied West Bank. Critics and humanitarian groups warn that it will effectively sever the northern Jordan Valley from Tubas and Nablus, isolating Palestinian communities.

Displacement and Demolitions: Construction requires the destruction of significant agricultural lands, greenhouses, water infrastructure, and local grazing areas. It threatens to displace thousands of Palestinians across dozens of communities.

"Creeping Annexation": Activists and political analysts describe the barrier as a mechanism for de-facto annexation. They argue it solidifies Israeli territorial control over the Jordan Valley—which makes up about 30% of the West Bank—making the territorial continuity of a future Palestinian state highly difficult to achieve.
