Ahemdabad ( Sarita Tripathi) :
The Gujarat government on Monday (October 5) announced that foreign medical graduates undergoing compulsory internships at government and GMERS medical colleges in the state would now receive a monthly stipend of Rs 21,840, at the same level as other MBBS interns.
Making the announcement, Health Minister Praful Pansheriya said the decision would benefit around 350 students currently undertaking internships.
Under National Medical Commission (NMC) regulations, medical graduates who complete their MBBS degree outside India are mandated to undergo a one-year mandatory internship in India before becoming eligible to practise medicine.
The health department said that FMGs allotted internships via the Gujarat Medical Council between June 1 and October 1, in accordance with NMC norms, will be eligible for the stipend.
Hailing the government’s move, the All India Medical Students’ Association (AIMSA) said, “Today marks a historic and long-awaited milestone for Foreign Medical Graduates in Gujarat.
The Government of Gujarat has taken an important decision regarding stipend for all eligible FMG interns undertaking their compulsory internship in Government Medical Colleges and GMERS Medical Colleges across Gujarat, including interns whose internships commenced on 15 December 2025, 1 June 2026 and 1 October 2026.”
